Light steel framing is no easy task, but there are numerous ways to get the job done. Four different types of connections when it comes to light steel framing are welded connections, bolted connections, press joining or clinching connections, and riveted connections.

Welded Connections

Welded connections are subject to a lot of stress, but do in fact get the job done when it comes to connecting steel framing. It strongly moulds together the beams, but there are also a couple of issues with welded connections.

The welding has to occur in the field of construction, therefore there is an increased risk that the weld is not as great as it could be. Outside factors like the wind and the movement of steel members can make it difficult to get that perfect connection that is desired.

Press Joining/Clinching

Press joining/clinching light steel framing together is a little bit of a process. Essentially, this type of connection is made to make the steel pieces fit together like a puzzle (a strong puzzle at that). Clinching in itself is defined as a combination of forming and drawing that locks two or more layers of steel together.

This method is effective in connecting light steel framing, but the amount of time it takes to get the job done makes it one of the lesser of the connections.

Riveted Connections

There are two types of riveted connections: blind rivets and self-piercing rivets. Blind rivets are fitted into pre-drilled holes, while that is not the case for self-piercing rivets. But regardless of their differences, they both provide a hearty attachment with good pull-out resistance.

The downside is that they are best used when it comes to thin connections like the seams on profiled decking and sheeting. Also, self-piercing rivets connections take a multiple-step process that needs to be completed using a hydraulic operated tool. So, for as good as riveted connections are, they may not compare to the next connection that is going to be discussed: bolted connections.

Thin Wall Bolts and Wall Bolts

Wall bolts are the most common way to connect lighting steel sections, but their simplicity does not make it any worse than any of the other connection types. Regular old wall bolts help during the roll forming process because of their effortless ability to punch through the steel sectioning. The capacity of the connection between the bolt and the steel typically depends on the strength of the thinner material, but regardless wall bolted connections hold up. They are an easy, simplistic way to get the job of light steel framing done.
